Devizes U16 girls made the long journey to play Solihull side Old Silhillians for their match in England Hockey’s U16 Plate competition.
Devizes came with a strong and eager team captained by Ruby Morton, who led the line fantastically all game.
Devizes started the stronger team with their press working very well pinning Old Silhillians back during the opening minutes.
Unfortunately one of the only times the press was broken, Old Silhillians managed to find a way all the way through and break the deadlock against the run of play.
Devizes didn’t let this throw them off their game and continued to play some great hockey, and through winning some personal battles managed to score a good equalising goal through Tilly Nickel.
A period of dominance by Devizes followed with the likes of Daisy Lawton-Johnson managing to bring both full backs into play with both Bella Caldwell and Izzy Lloyd doing great work up both flanks. The highlight being some fantastic build up which lead to a chance which Maisie Slack was very unlucky with as she got it over the keeper but it hit the bar.
The game got more stretched in the second half with Devizes winning the ball well and just failing to make the final pass needed to create the chance they deserved.
Old Silhillians had several attacks on the break but through a combination of great performances from Lou Wood, Ruby House and Issy Morton they couldn’t make these attacks count.
With the scores level at full time this led to penalty flicks. Issy Morton saved their first three while Devizes missed a couple.
Martha Cracknell then stepped up and put one in the top left to calm Devizes nerves. Old Silhillians scored their next one only for Tilly to also score her flick.
Old Silhillians denied their last one via the post meant that Devizes had got the result they deserved and head into the next round confident no matter who they draw.
Captain Ruby Morton said: “The team really wanted this win and we went in fired up - ready to take on whatever the opposition could throw at us.
“Every player stepped it up several gears, gave it their all and we produced some really strong hockey throughout the match.
“I’m proud of the team performance, every single player was standout!“
