Devizes Hockey Club Cardiff University 4 -2 Devizes
Wadworth 6X sponsored Devizes first team travelled over the bridge to face Cardiff University this week. With Cardiff very close to the drop zone in the table it was a game they simply had to win if they were to survive in this league. This resulted in it being a tough task for Devizes who are sitting comfortably in mid table with three games remaining.
The University boys started the hungrier of the two teams and the intention of pinning Devizes in their own half was clear to see. Devizes struggled to get into the game and could not maintain any periods of possession or create any patterns in their play. Sloppy defending and lack of structure resulted in Devizes going into half time 3 goals down.
After some strong words in the team talk, Devizes came out the second half as a completely different team. The fight was back in their game and they began to play with some composure again. To Cardiff's credit they new what was at stake and certainly were not going to gift any opportunities to the visitors.
Devizes ended up winning the second half 2-1, with the in form striker Jack Betenson scoring both goals. One was a coolly placed finish from a tight angle and the other was a drag flick masterpiece that completely fooled the keeper.
Despite the loss, Devizes must take credit for playing their way back into the game against a very focused and motivated team. There have been a lot of changes in recent weeks to the Devizes team sheet so to be able to perform in the second half in way they did gives a clear indication of the potential throughout the squad. Another positive point is that the Wiltshire boys fielded four under 18 year olds from their youth setup who have all played their part in recent weeks and performed very well.
This week the Wadworth 6X sponsored Man of the Match is awarded to Jack ‘Goal Machine' Betenson for ending his recent drought and giving a tireless performance throughout the game.
Devizes host Cheltenham in the last home game of the season next week. This will be a very interesting and entertaining match as Cheltenham will gain promotion if they get three points from the game, something Devizes will not make easy for them!
