Devizes Hockey Club DEVIZES 3 - 5 BRISTOL UNIVERSITY
Wadworth 6x Sponsored Devizes first team faced a tough home fixture to Bristol University this week. Bristol are also in the challenging group of promotion hopefuls.
The game could not have started any brighter for Devizes, who clearly dominated the first half. With flashes of their very best hockey, the Wiltshire boys were comfortable on the ball all around the park and forced the visitors to make several mistakes. Devizes went into the interval with a healthy 3-1 lead, following goals from the in form Jim Tyler, Sam Gaiger, with a true cricketers finish at the far post, and another smashing strike from big gun Russ Mcquillan.
Unfortunately the second half was not to continue in the same fashion. Bristol University came out of the blocks with changed tactics and a real desire to get back into the game. From the off they managed to unsettle Devizes and were quick to capitalise on some sloppy mistakes, and incredibly win the game 5-3 with an emphatic come back.
This was certainly a game of two halves and the usually-calm Devizes boy's only had themselves to blame in throwing away a convincing lead. The positive outcome to be taken from this game is the attractive hockey in the first half, which pulled Bristol Uni to pieces. This must be continued along with more sustained periods of possession and composure. Devizes look to build on this for their second weekend fixture away to Isca on Sunday.
The Wadworth 6X man of the match is this week awarded to Charles ‘the Machine' Hansen for his superb effort and work rate in the Devizes midfield.
